Jack Thorne's adaptation of Charles Dickens's novella, directed by Matthew Warchus and staged in the round with the audience wrapped around the action, has been The Old Vic's Christmas show every year since 2017 and is billed as London's longest-running adaptation; 2026 is its tenth anniversary season. Christopher Nightingale's carol arrangements, Rob Howell's lantern-lit design and the famous mince pies and bell-ringing finale make it as much a communal festive event as a ghost story. Giles Terera (Hamilton, Oh, Mary!, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) plays Scrooge in what he describes as Warchus's final year as artistic director.

A one-night recreation of Charles Dickens's own celebrated dramatic readings of A Christmas Carol, blending solo storytelling with live performances of well-loved Christmas music. Writer-director-actor Tama Matheson (Artistic Director of the Brisbane Shakespeare Festival, creator of the "Music-Play" format) performs the whole cavalcade of Dickens characters, with Australian-British concert pianist Jayson Gillham (ARIA-nominated for his complete Beethoven concertos) at the piano. The venue bills it as "part concert and part play" – an intimate 85-seat fringe-theatre evening rather than a West End spectacle.

A camp, deliberately filthy Christmas musical parody of Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Kevin is once again separated from his family and let loose in New York — billed as "the gayest place on Earth" — armed with his dad's credit card, meeting two hapless burglars, an eccentric hotel manager and a Trump cameo. It is the sequel to Homo Alone, The Other Palace Studio's five-star-reviewed Christmas 2024 hit (written by Jodie Prenger and Bobby Delaney); the sequel is written by Jodie Prenger (I'd Do Anything winner, Oliver!'s Nancy) and Neil Hurst and directed by Laura Checkley, and the producers say you need not have seen the first.

A live, shot-for-shot comedy parody of "the most epic novel and fantasy film of all time" (i.e. The Fellowship of the Ring), in which three actors and a Foley artist recreate the whole saga in about an hour using mime, shadow puppetry, live sound effects and a cappella. It is made by Recent Cutbacks, the US/UK ensemble behind the Jurassic Park parody Hold On To Your Butts, after two sold-out Edinburgh Fringe seasons; this Southwark Playhouse run (25 Nov 2026 - 16 Jan 2027) is the company's first London production. Verdi's 1849 melodramma tragico in three acts (libretto by Salvadore Cammarano after Schiller's Kabale und Liebe): Luisa, a miller's daughter, loves Rodolfo, who is secretly the son of the feudal lord Count Walter; the count's secretary Wurm, her rejected suitor, blackmails her into a false letter, and the lovers die by poison before Rodolfo kills Wurm. Vienna's current staging by director-designer Philipp Grigorian (photographed in February 2026, 2025/26 season) moves the story into a "workers' paradise" company town and a sauna-like castle, framed as Miller's surreal nightmare in a psychedelic graphic-novel style.

The Konzerthaus billing ('Don Giovanni unmittelbar erleben') explains the concept: strip away elaborate sets and let the characters, their relationships, longings and contradictions carry the drama, with costumes, projections and bilingual surtitles woven into the action. The project is also a platform for young singers at the start of international careers - the cast of seven is largely emerging talent.

This children's opera takes young audiences on an adventure through the Vienna State Opera building itself, from the grand staircase to the Gustav Mahler Hall and the galleries. Along the way the children meet a mysterious bird, the Queen of the Night, Papageno and magic instruments, and they solve riddles together. Composer Gerald Resch has arranged Mozart's Magic Flute for a smaller ensemble and added new music, but kept favourites such as the Queen of the Night's aria and Papageno's bird-catcher song. Nina Blum devised and directs it, with text by Margit Mezgolich. It is sung in German.

It traces Marie Antoinette's life at Versailles from her wedding and the court's rituals (the unconsummated marriage, the snub of Madame du Barry, the masked ball where she meets Axel von Fersen, the hameau at Trianon) to the march on Versailles, in Malandain's neoclassical style that blends Baroque gesture with modern vigour.

John Cranko's three-act narrative ballet (Stuttgart Ballet, 1965) tells Pushkin's verse novel entirely through dance: the bookish Tatyana falls for the bored, worldly Onegin, who rejects her letter, flirts with her sister Olga and kills his friend Lensky in a duel; years later he meets her again as Prince Gremin's wife, declares his love, and she tears up his letter and sends him away. The score is Tchaikovsky — mostly piano pieces such as The Seasons, not the opera — arranged and orchestrated by Kurt-Heinz Stolze, with sets and costumes by Elisabeth Dalton and lighting by Steen Bjarke.

On this Sunday the Augustinerkirche's high mass is sung by its chamber choir instead of the usual choir-and-orchestra mass. The setting is Hans Leo Hassler's Missa secunda. The choir also sings Praetorius's 'Nun komm der Heiden Heiland' and Brahms's 'O Heiland, reiß die Himmel auf', Op. 74 No. 2, and the organ plays Mendelssohn's Prelude in G major, Op. 37 No. 2. The celebrant is Dechant P. Matthias Schlögl OSA.

The 09:15 Sunday mass in the Habsburgs' court chapel is the oldest continuous musical institution in Vienna (the Hofmusikkapelle dates from 1498) and is the setting in which the Vienna Boys' Choir is normally heard. On 29 November 2026, the First Sunday of Advent, the soprano and alto lines are instead sung by the Wiener Chormädchen (Vienna Girls' Choir, founded 2004, the female counterpart that alternates with the boys), together with members of the Men's Chorus of the Vienna State Opera and the Choralschola of the Hofburgkapelle.

St Peter's is Vienna's first baroque domed church, built 1701–1733 to plans by Gabriele Montani and Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, with Johann Michael Rottmayr's dome fresco (1713–14) and an organ conceived by Matthias Steinl (3 manuals, 34 stops, 2,175 pipes; overhauled 2005); its pastoral care has been entrusted to Opus Dei priests since 1970. The parish runs a standing programme of free, donation-based music: an organ recital every day at 15:00 and 'Musik in der Kirche' (organ or choir) every day at 19:00 except Thursdays, plus a sung Latin High Mass on Sundays at 11:15.

Written and directed by Theu Boermans with music by Boermans and Keren Kagarlitsky (reconstructed from the period operetta), it commemorates the staff who were driven out or murdered, shows the perpetrators and the bystanders, and is played by the Volksoper's orchestra, singers and ensemble, so it sits between a play and an operetta.

Zurich's Tonhalle-Orchester plays it under its Music Director Paavo Järvi, who has spent four seasons on a Mahler cycle with the orchestra (recordings on Alpha), as the final stop of a November 2026 European tour (Zurich 11–13 Nov, Baden-Baden, Amsterdam, Hamburg, then Vienna).

Wien Modern ends its festival with the first complete performance at the Musikverein of Friedrich Cerha's 'Spiegel I–VII' (1960–61), marking the Austrian composer's 100th birthday. The cycle is a feature-length orchestral work that at times sounds like electronic music and drops conventional themes, harmonies and rhythms. Cerha wove in his own war experiences and visions of creation and the end of the world. Two student orchestras, from the Kunstuniversität Graz (Oberschützen) and the Joseph Haydn Privathochschule Burgenland, play under Johannes Kalitzke.

A new music-theatre evening on Joseph Roth's 1924 novel Hotel Savoy, in which a grand hotel in a post-war border town becomes a microcosm of a collapsed Europe — luxury on the lower floors, misery in the attic rooms, and a symbolic fire at the end. Burgtheater star Nicholas Ofczarek speaks Roth's text while the East Tyrolean Musicbanda Franui weave in operetta hits from 1900–1935, so that something darker lurks behind every cheerful melody (composition and arrangement Andreas Schett and Markus Kraler; stage version Rita Czapka and Andreas Schett; text Tamara Metelka; lighting Paul Grilj).
